Spent 3 weeks in Yellowstone/MT. It was a hot and dry July out west, seemed more like August. Fishing was a bit slow as you can imagine with 90+ degree sunny days. Did get to spend 2 days in the Yellowstone Volunteer Fly Fishing Program. We tagged a bunch of fish on Slough and the Gibbon. It was nice to see the program is making good progress in the way of data collection and Yellowstone Cutthroat restoration!
Most days started fairly early and ended by mid afternoon due to the heat. Hoot owl and closures started in the Madison drainage a few days after our arrival. By the time we left, Hoot owl was on in most of the park's streams. They desperately need some cooler weather and rain or August is going to be a disaster. It was pretty cool to fish the Salmon Fly hatch, or at least see them. Fish were not overly active on them, probably due to the heat. While we did take a good number of fish on chubbys, many days had us switching over to small stuff (PMDs, mayfly spinners, small parachutes, etc.) to get fish to cooperate. Here are a few pics:
