Trout Tales - Feb 25 2011

A FRIEND OF MINE RECENTLY ASKED ME IF I EVER HEARD OF A WEATHER REPORT….YEAH, BUT I TRY NOT TO LET THEM GET IN THE WAY OF FISHING.  THAT BEING SAID, BRETT AND I HEADED UP TO ERIE FRIDAY MORNING.  DROVE THROUGH SNOW AND RAIN AND AROUND 2 ACCIDENTS.  MANAGED TO ROLL IN AROUND 1:30PM.  AFTER SHOVELING OUT A PARKING SPOT, WE WERE ON THE WATER.  CONDITIONS WERE LESS THAN FAVORABLE.  WE ARRIVED TO FIND LOW CLEAR WATER, WHITEOUTS, SHELF ICE, AND SLUSH.  THERE WAS A LITTLE OPEN WATER AND THE BELOW FREEZING TEMPS CAUSED MAJOR ICING.  NOT ONLY WAS THERE ICE ON THE GUIDES, BUT THE LEADERS CONTINUALLY ICED UP.  WE CHECKED OUT SEVERAL SPOTS THROUGHOUT THE AFTERNOON, BUT DIDN’T EVEN SEE A FISH…OR A PERSON, HAD THE LEGION HOLE ON ELK ALL TO OURSELVES, THAT NEVER HAPPENS.  DECIDED TO CALL IT A DAY.

TAKE TWO.  HEADED OVER TO SOME DIFFERENT WATER TODAY.  STILL ENCOUNTERED SHELF ICE AND A TON OF SLUSH EARLY, WHICH EVENTUALLY CLEARED OUT.  ACTUALLY SAW A FEW BLACK STONES CRAWLING AROUND.  WENT TO A COUPLE GOOD HOLES I KNEW, BUT THEY WERE FROZE SOLID.  DECIDED TO WORK OUR WAY UP STREAM AND RAN INTO A COUPLE GUYS (BOB AND VINCE) WE HAD TALKED TO IN THE MORNING.  THEY WERE IN A HOLE THAT HAD SOME FISH IN IT.  WE SPENT SOME TIME BREAKING THE ICE SHELVES OFF TO MAKE FISHING POSSIBLE.  ALL FOUR OF US MANAGED TO HOOK INTO A FEW AND LAND A COUPLE AS WELL.  BROKE ICE AND FISHED  THE REST OF THE DAY.  NOT A WHOLE LOT OF ACTION, BUT BETTER THAN YESTERDAY.

WITH SOME RENEWED HOPE AFTER YESTERDAY, WE HEADED BACK TO OUR SPOT.  BLACK STONES WERE CRAWLING EVERYWHERE AS THE TEMPS WERE ACTUALLY ABOVE FREEZING.  RAN INTO OUR NEW BUDDIES AND WE GOT RIGHT TO BREAKING ICE.  SINCE THE TEMPS HAD WARMED SOME, WE WERE ABLE TO DO SOME SERIOUS CLEARING, 5 FOOT CHUNKS AT A TIME.  AFTER THE “WORK” WAS DONE, WE MANAGED A DECENT NUMBER OF HOOK UPS AND A FEW LANDS.  EVEN MANAGED TO CATCH ONE THAT VINCE HAD BROKE OFF BY HOOKING HIS WEIGHT WITH MY FLY.  ALL AND ALL, NOT A BAD TRIP DESPITE THE BRUTAL CONDITIONS.  LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING BACK IN THE NEXT COUPLE WEEKS.

END REPORT
